The flagship model in Argon 18’s triathlon/TT lineup gets a face-lift for 2015 with a modified front end that gives it an even more aggressive profile against the wind. Along with a few geometry tweaks aimed at improving comfort and stability in the aero position, these new updates result in a frame that tests faster in the wind tunnel and is also lighter than the previous E-118.

Argon 18 calls the new technology ONEness 3.0. It’s essentially a redesign of the cockpit area that results in a more integrated connection between the frame, fork, stem and bars. The top half of a “virtual stem “connects directly to the steering column, clamping the bar in place with a lower stack height. The result is a sleek new look that’s not only more lower and more aero but also stiffer that the previous design. Bonus: It’s also one of the reasons this year’s frame set is 100 grams lighter.

Unlike many of the triathlon superbikes on the market, the 2015 E-118 Next is fully UCI legal. Argon 18 works closely with the German professional cycling team BORA-Argon 18, and its riders rely on this bike for time trial competition. So if you’re aiming for a state time trial championship this year, this may be the bike for you.

That said, the E-118 was designed with triathlon in mind. Understanding that it’s the rider, not the bike, that creates most of the drag on a TT/triathlon bike, engineers fine-tuned the geometry to allow optimal positioning for riders of all different sizes and riding styles. It’s all about allowing you to easily dial in a position that enables you stay in your aero tuck longer and with more comfort.

The geometry has been adjusted this year to give the E-118 a more comfortable, stable ride in that tuck position. At 39.5mm, the chainstays are longer than most. And the bottom bracket has been lowered to position the rider lower on the bike. The result, Argon 18 says, is better control, especially in cross winds. So you can stay lower without feeling cramped and fatigued.

Beyond the new front end, there are several other integrated frame technologies worth noting. The aero brakes are hidden from the wind, behind the fork (front) and below the bottom bracket (rear). The aero-shaped carbon-fiber seatpost is reversible and easy to adjust. The frameset comes with bar extensions that can be cut straight or with a ski bend—your choice. The bike is Di2/EPS compatible with internal cable routing for either electronic or mechanical drivetrains. And the adjustable front derailleur hanger is compatible with compact or oval chainrings.

Like all Argon 18 bikes, the E-118 Next carbon fiber frameset also features the Horizontal Dual System (HDS) design principle, which essentially divides the frame into two zones—the super stiff power zone in the lower sections and the more compliant, vibration-damping areas in the upper sections. This is achieved through strategic tube shapes and also layup schedule of the carbon fiber. The result is a bike that delivers efficient power transfer but also feels light, predictable and comfortable during long efforts.
